The importance of being accurate

When we use other people's ideas and words, we must ensure that we represent the original author accurately. This means quoting precisely, showing the true spirit of the ideas, and not mangling or manipulating them if they don't say exactly what we want them to. If the quote or idea isn't quite right... find another one! Accuracy also means not changing the words accidentally, not misspelling or changing the grammar in direct quotes, and making sure we fully understand the meaning of the ideas used. Documenting each citation will also allow the reader to look at the original text - the reader will catch you if you are inaccurate or imprecise.
