One or Several Revolutions?
The clichéd statement that “The Internet is revolutionary” often means nothing except that it is new, different, and took its place in history so quickly that no one really understood what was happing, what has happened. But what we must now attempt to comprehend are the many ways the Internet has already incited not one but several revolutions: in the nature of the sign and the signified, in the production and dissemination of media, in the conception of the marketplace, and in the mode and meaning of public and common discourse.
