11/20/09 - Columbia University Libraries Tour
Columbia University Libraries will host SLA@Pratt members for a half-day series of meetings with some of their librarians, along with tours of individual libraries. The visit is scheduled for Friday, November 20th from 12:30 - 4:30 pm. The tour schedule is:
12:30 - 2:00 - Butler Library
Butler Library houses collections in the humanities, history, government documents, and the social sciences, as well as the media center, electronic text services, inter-library loan, and reference.
2:15 - 3:15 - Rare Manuscripts and Books Library
RMBL holdings include the Carnegie Collections, Medieval & Renaissance Manuscripts, Oral History Research Office, Papyri and Ostraca, and Rare Books.
3:30 - 4:30 - participants choose ONE of the following libraries:
Avery Architectural & Fine Arts Library
Business & Economics Library
Lehman Social Sciences Library
Columbia University Libraries has limited the number of participants to twenty students. The tour is open to all Pratt SILS students; however, SLA@Pratt members have first priority. Non-members interested in attending should submit their requests, but can only be accommodated as space permits.
In your request, indicate which of the three libraries you wish to visit for the third tour. I will add your names to the list in the order received, using the date/time stamp when your e-mail was sent. I will send a follow-up notice to SILS Announce when the tour is full, and at that time, will also send confirmations to all who replied.
A photo ID is required for admittance into the libraries.
Please RSVP to Neal Profitt at sprofitt [at] pratt.edu by 6:00 pm Monday, November 16th if you would like to attend. We will meet at in front of the Butler Library at 12:15 pm.
If your plans change and you are unable to attend, please let me know as soon as possible so that another student can take your place.

Please Join Us for The New York Information and Intelligence Forum A discussion of the challenges of 2009 and the opportunities of 2010 Brought to you by the New York Chapter of SLA Thursday, November 19th, 2009, 9 a.m. - 5:30 p.m.* Dr. William Duggan, our featured keynote speaker is a best-selling business author and Senior Lecturer at Columbia University. Professor Duggan’s primary teaching and research interest is strategic intuition as the key to innovation. He is the author of three recent books on strategic intuition: Napoleon's Glance: The Secret of Strategy (2002); The Art of What Works: How Success Really Happens (2003); and Strategic Intuition: The Creative Spark in Human Achievement (2007). In 2007 the journal Strategy+Business named Strategic Intuition “Best Strategy Book of the Year.” Dr. Duggan teaches strategic intuition at Columbia Business School and has been an active consultant and advisor to the business community. Our Providers Panel will feature: Ms. Clare Hart, Executive Vice President of Dow Jones & Co., and President, Dow Jones Enterprise Media Group; Mr. Steven Goldstein, Co-founder, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Alacra; Mr. Scott Livingston, Vice President of Lexis-Nexis; and Ms. Trish Frankenfield, Director, Client Development, at Capital IQ. Our Information Professionals panel will feature: Ms. Karen Kreizman Reczek , Senior Manager, Information Resource Services, Bureau Veritas Consumer Products Services, and Mr. Bill Patterson, Director, Research & Analysis, PricewaterhouseCoopers. The Forum will be held at Baruch College, 151 East 25th Street (between Lexington and Third), Newman Conference Center, 7th floor.
Ticket price includes breakfast, coffee breaks, and lunch. Members registering before Saturday, October 31st pay $25 for this event. Members registering Monday November 2nd through Friday November 13th pay $35. Non Members pay $75. Student ticket price is $10.
