This
course covers the history of art and architecture in Paleolithic, Neolithic, ancient
Western and medieval cultures. Emphasis is on key architectural monuments considered
in a cultural context.

course covers the history of art and architecture in key non-Western cultures
(Pre-Columbian America, India, China and Japan) and in the West from the Renaissance
through 19th century Europe and the United States. Emphasis is on key architectural
monuments considered in a cultural context.

History of Modern Architecture Seminar
This
seminar examines the history of 20th century art and architecture in Europe and
the United States with considerations of Asia and post-colonial cultures. Emphasis
is on key architectural monuments considered in a cultural context.

ARCH-506P:
The Architecture and Thought of Frank Llyod Wright
This
course surveys the buildings and writings of Wright. It looks at influences on
Wright from Sullivan, Emerson and eastern spiritual thoughts. It also discusses
Wright's influences and his relevance to us today.

ARCH-509P:
Kahn and Venturi
The
work and philosophies of Louis Kahn and Robert Venturi are presented as a detailed
study of two major trends in modern architecture: organic or "integrated" architecture,
typical of Wright, Mies and Corbu and exemplified by Kahn; and "decorated construction,"
typical of the 19th century eclectics and the post-modernists and exemplified
by Venturi. Besides slide-illustrated lectures and reading, there will be in-class
and take-home drawing assignments to give students graphic familiarity with the
material.

Philosophy of Technology
This
course consists of a sequence of lectures (mostly slide-illustrated) in the philosophical
foundations of science and technology and their relation to creative architectural
and engineering design. The course correlates specific construction techniques,
building studies and environmental design with questions of aesthetics, perception,
performance and understanding.
